The Greeks distinguished between measured time and moments existing outside of ordinary time. Summer afternoons somewhat belong to the latter and seem to exist only briefly before becoming memories. Speaking of memory, mine is not so interested in accuracy; it prefers atmosphere.
When I'm at my home in Italy, I sometimes take the boat to Giglio. After swimming in the beautiful coves, I love to have lunch with family and friends in a restaurant right at the port. Below the terrace is a sandy beach. When the children are bored with the adults, they get up and go play in the water.

One day, when visiting Vevey by the wonderful Lake Geneva, I entered a restaurant. Because I didn't want to ruin the setting of the table, I didn't eat anything and left.
By the way, in Japanese aesthetics, there is a concept called ma: the meaningful space between things. I believe mornings understand this idea particularly well.

After a flying lesson, I met Julie at the restaurant of the Oakland airport. A few months later, while visiting my parents in Switzerland, she called me. We drove to the countryside to go for a walk, with the intention of my photographing her. Suddenly, the shadows in the forest asked for an intimacy to be remembered. I never saw Julie again.

In mythology, crows have long been entrusted with inconvenient responsibilities. They are expected to carry messages between worlds, announce change, or reveal uncomfortable truths.
This particular crow appears indifferent to its assignment. I sat on the terrace of my hotel in Trivandrum, Southern India, having breakfast when it landed in front of me. Surrounded by blossoms, it reminds me how eagerly we assign meaning to things that are merely being themselves. Yet, any small incident can be considered magic.

I never liked the idea of an oyster. It doesn't look appealing, whether open or closed. It looks like an ugly stone. Miraculously, over the centuries, a restaurant found a stage for them. Presenting them as if they were diamonds. An oyster waits for a lemon like flowers wait for water. One may also suggest that an oyster needs moisture.
Like most young people, I never imagined eating even one of them. One day, I walked from my studio on Prince Street in New York to a restaurant called Balthazar. Just to impress my guest, I ordered a dozen of them. I was thirty-three and called it the year of Jesus (he died at thirty-three). And suddenly, I enjoyed slurping these creepy things.

Somewhere along the emergence of Los Angeles becoming a city, someone decided that roads need palm trees. Not one or two, but enough to create a sense of feeling welcomed. I like the optimism of that decision. Especially because the stem of this particular palm tree is tall enough to speak to the dream that this city was built on, precisely to become the epicenter of the entertainment industry. Maybe just for its light and stability in weather.
The wide and endless boulevards serve as a metaphor for the destiny of talent. Above it, a cloud seems to ask every resident and dreamer one question: did you make it, and if so, are you happy?

Snow has a talent for adjusting proportions. Mountains become hills, distances become estimates.
Ordinarily, the ski lifts stop in the early evening, around 4:15 pm. I enjoy standing at the top of the mountain at dusk when everyone else has left. One day, when everything was so quiet I could only hear my own breathing, a stylish woman with perfect hair, probably American, passed me. Suddenly I heard nothing but her elegant swinging through the snow.

I find wind difficult to paint. Also, no one has ever asked for it.
Trees are cooperative. Wind prefers to remain anonymous. It reveals itself only indirectly, in the moving clouds and pale traces left across the ground.
When I'm driving to my house at Monte Argentario, a line of pine trees crosses the Via Aurelia freeway. I have seen it in every light possible and always meant to stop and photograph it. But I never did. I don't think one can capture nature with a camera, our eyes make better art.
By the time the painting was finished, the wind had moved on, leaving only a few shadows. I have always admired visitors who know when to leave.

In my art, I have always felt drawn to swimming pools. They promise company, laughter and relief, yet are often at their most beautiful when no one is there.
A pool at night feels like a stage after the performance has ended. Or a restaurant when the guests have left. The water luminous, not asking anything of you. It simply waits. For the next first dive, the morning sun. Some places rest in peace.

Every country has its traditions. In the Anglo-Saxon territories, clubs are an important part of privileged society. Personally, I never aspired to be part of one. I always feared I'd misbehave. And the few times I did try proved I was right.
In my late twenties, through a friend, I became part of the Mulholland Tennis Club. Playing a few balls there during sunset is one of my favorite memories of my time living in America. My playing partner was Marc Forster, who later became a well-known director of movies such as Monster's Ball and Finding Neverland.
Of all things designed by man, I enjoy the aesthetic of a golf course and tried to capture it from a Bird’s-eye view.

It's quite annoying to admit, but I'm sensitive to almost everything I observe. Maybe that's why I don't fit into most parameters of society. Seagulls are different. They can mingle in a crowd as if nothing matters. Whenever I would leave a premise in Porto, it seemed as if they wanted to surprise me. Or scare me. That we don't know.
Back in the hotel, I made a sketch of it, which I later turned into a painting. One of the most interesting facts about art to me is how every motif naturally asks for its size. And how size requests the appropriate distance from the viewer.

When I was a child, there weren't many choices about where to go. My life unfolded largely in an adult world. Both of my parents worked a great deal, and my brother and I were looked after by an extended tribe of family members and employees from my father's company.
One of the places they took me was the zoo in Zurich. I would always head straight for the mid-century hippopotamus house. There we visited the mother hippo and her baby, resting in a pool improbably close to the edge of their enclosure. All you could see were their ears, playfully wiggling above the surface. It almost became a ritual to wait, hoping one of them would emerge from the basin. Sometimes one did.
Once I dreamt of my old friend standing in the desert beneath a full moon, adjacent to two palm trees. I've rarely spoken about this, but my godfather, Federico Fellini, taught me a few things, not least about dreams. He used to say, "dreams are the only honest form of communication."

A room without a plant often seems lonely. A room with too many plants feels fake. Not every plant likes its environment.
Without thinking of cubism, but thinking of cubism, this work became one of my greatest inspirations to achieve what an artist can't explain. How can something develop genuinely without an intention? It is the unprecedented privilege of what I would call 'the moment'. Apologies, maybe it was impressionism after all.

Roses and lemons are constant companions, both at home and in my studio. When I see flowers, I feel calm, which is usually not my state of mind. Lemons, like cherries, make me happy. And if saying so disappoints peaches and basil, I should add that they have much of the same effect.
